Born and bred in Maplewood and Millburn, NJ, soprano Joanne Scattergood had 13 years of ballet lessons, 9 years of piano lessons, and 5 years of voice lessons before entering college. She had also sung with the New Jersey Opera Association and danced with the New Jersey Ballet Company. Ms. Scattergood received her Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, where she studied as a mezzo-soprano with Helen Hubbard and Sofia Steffan (of the New York City Opera). Later, realizing she was a soprano, she studied for eight years with internationally acclaimed soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson. In addition, Ms. Scattergood has coached with Thomas Grubb and Warren Jones, and has a Certificate of Study from the Fontainebleau School of Music in France. She has been teaching for over 45 years and centers her teaching on the freedom and health of the larynx. Presently, Ms. Scattergood teaches at Central Connecticut State University, Westminster School, and in her home studio in Simsbury, CT.
Ms. Scattergood has sung oratorio for Robert Shaw, Paul Halley, Michael Korn, Michael Lankester, John Rutter, James Sinclair, and Sir Michael Tippett. In addition, she has sung with several professional choral groups, including CONCORA, Arcadia Players, The Woodland Scholars, and VOCE. A finalist in the Pro musicis Competition in NYC to promote recitalists, Ms. Scattergood continues to sing recitals regularly and finds this to be her preferred way to express herself musically.
Ms. Scattergood served as the Artistic Director for the Ensign-Darling Vocal Fellowship, sponsored by the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, which was a “full-scholarship vocal program for a select number of very talented and highly motivated high school singers interested in classical and theatrical music.” In this capacity, Ms. Scattergood shared her talents as well as her expansive industry knowledge with students as she taught voice, music education, vocal coaching, stage direction, choreography, costume design and rehearsal organization. Ms. Scattergood also composes and arranges music, a necessity as the Artistic Director of the EDVF. Ms. Scattergood is available for master classes for choral groups, school systems, and colleges nationwide.
